I’m sure, if you ask anyone, why do I need someone to tell me how to drink my rum? You may think I can do a great job on my own thank you very much lol But what if you found out your rum could taste even better with a little knowledge about what you are sipping on, how it’s made, ingredients, tasting notes and much more! Phew, how can I find out all that by myself just sipping on my rum? Well, friends, that’s where a rum masterclass comes to the rescue.

There are many ways to attend a masterclass and if you look, you will most likely be pleasantly surprised there may be one very close to you. A local search online will throw up a few suggestions or if willing to travel, large events like rum festivals, private tasting classes etc are available through the year.

So what can you expect, and why should you attend a Masterclass?
Understand the journey from cane to cocktail, uncover the world of rum and learn about rums origins & history, the distilling and ageing process, how to understand the flavours and smells. All this knowledge as you enjoy tastings from a range of exclusively chosen rums from worldwide brands in the form of white, dark, golden, aged, spiced and navy, styles, as the stories of each rum brand are explained.
Some masterclasses finish with the making of a rum cocktail for you to enjoy or participate in making. You will also sometimes be lucky to meet the brand ambassador of the actual rum and can ask questions, meet like-minded rum lovers in a wonderful non-intimidating environment and maybe grab a discount on a bottle. A tasting usually consists of 4-6 rum samples, so that’s defiantly bang for your buck when trying to discover new brands to add to your collection.
You can expect to pay anywhere from £25 and upwards depending on the exclusivity of the rums and who is doing the presentation, eg official master blender, brand ambassador etc.
So what are you waiting for? Your next rum discovery and knowledge is waiting for you to explore in a rum masterclass. Some of these are even virtual if you want to try something at home first. Some virtual tastings also send you a rum sample pack in advance ready for the class, so no cheating in advance, lol.
