Very good or out of this world! “Maita’i roa a ‘e” roughly translated when someone tasted this drink for the first time. An American bar tender by the name Trader Vic allegedly created the cocktail. We will surely find out if this tropical wonder of a cocktail lives up to this name. Many people have discovered the mai tai cocktail when on holiday and come back home searching for a bar that specializes in capturing a taste of their sun filled holiday in a glass.
A Polynesian inspired cocktail using heavy rum, syrups and lime juice will transport your imagination (especially if you’re in rainy parts of the country!) to some wondrous sunny island with each sip.
So if you’re ready, let’s make a mai tai.
Recipe and ingredients.
You will need:
- Heavy aged rum (Jamaican) 60ml (2fl oz)
- Lime juice 20ml
- Orange Curaçao
- Orgeat syrup
- simple syrup
Method:
- Pour all ingredients into a shaker
- fill the shaker with ice, shake for 10–15 secs vigorously
- strain the cocktail into a tiki or tropical mug with fresh crushed ice
- garnish with mint sprig and lime wheel (preferably fresh) or, to be really tropical and fancy, a pineapple wedge with a cherry on top! Enjoy
