Sours are not typically something you tend to ask for in a rum cocktail, especially when new to the category, so this is something to try or order on your next trip to the cocktail bar.
This recipe includes egg, but you can omit if you are not that way inclined, it will still be a great tasting cocktail.
Ingredients list:
Rum of course! – You can use a white rum or dark rum, try what you have on hand and see what you prefer, light rums tend to have a lighter taste, darker rum has richer flavour, especially if it is slightly aged.
Lime juice – the fresher, the better. I use key limes, these give a wonderfully bright sour flavour.
Simple syrup – I use agave and make my simple syrup with this, you can make your own syrup at home, its quick and simple, but make ahead so it has time to cool down.
Egg white – The original version of this cocktail uses egg white, you can omit if it’s not your thang as it’s not dependent on the recipe. Experiment with both to see the difference.
Bitters: Use a few drops at the end of making cocktail, again this can be optional.
Instructions:
1: Put all the ingredients together in a shaker without ice and shake for 15 seconds. That helps to create a strong, foamy top for your drink if you are using egg white.
2: Now add your ice to shaker with your ingredients, shake again for 10 seconds to make drink nice and chilled.
3: Use a strainer and pour mixture into (if you have one) a pre chilled sour glass (without ice) if using a larger style glass, you can top with ice. Finally add a couple of drops of Angostura bitters to elevate the cocktail even more, enjoy your Rum Sour folks. This is best served straight away, or you will lose froth and texture.
Let us know how you enjoyed this recipe and feel free to experiment with different bitters and rum to create wonderful variations. Cheers
