Certainly NOT a rum to begin your introduction to drinking this wonderful spirit, as it may potentially blow your head off. However, the more seasoned veterans who have put in some work & trained their palettes these flavoursome rums can be enjoyed (responsibly) neat
Any rum over 50% proof is classed as overproof
Rums have an alcohol content of 57% or higher phew, higher alcohol and less water, so more flavour. Overproof rums tend to have no additives or hidden extras added to the bottle. The flavour is very intense, and it’s a type of rum to use in moderation!
If you’re one for party tricks, overproof rum tends to be used in those fancy cocktails that the bar tender sets on fire e.g. a flaming zombie, do not try at home if you like your eyebrows intact and your house not being hosed down by emergency services!

Some of the most popular overproof rums you may come across are Wray & Nephew, Rum Bar, Rumfire Sunset (use with extreme caution, you have been warned!)
These go great mixed in a cocktail for extra bite and can be enjoyed once you are in the groove of your rum journey. So overproof can be enjoyed neat, however do keep some water close at hand if you can’t handle the burn.
